About Sheffield Licence Watch
What is Sheffield Licence Watch
Known for many years by its older name of Sheffield Pub Watch, this watch scheme is a partnership of licensees from both pubs, nightclubs, off-licences and restaurants across the whole of Sheffield.
The scheme has been administered by the crime reduction charity People United Against Crime since 2001, and is fully supported by South Yorkshire Police and all the regulatory authorities that take part in liquor licensing activities.
With over 750 members it is probably the largest in the country and is a very effective and pro-active watch scheme. Trouble causers and offenders are banned from entering several licensed premises in an area around where problems and incidents have occurred. These banning Zones are being re-aligned to match the 23 policing areas of Sheffield, known as Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT).
Committee Structure
There is a very active committee that directs the way in which Sheffield Licence Watch operates. The committee includes a selection of licensing practitioners from many areas of the trade with licensees, licensing managers and representatives from the regulatory authorities.
Sub Groups
Across Sheffield there are several smaller watch groups that meet on a regular basis and feed their activities back to the main Sheffield Licence Watch. Often this entails the local group banning a trouble maker, which is then ratified by the main committee resulting in a formal Licence Watch ban.
Initiatives
Several projects are always ongoing via Sheffield Licence Watch.
Sheffield Licence Watch On-Line - a web based communication system, allowing participating licensees and other partners to have a swifter method of being in contact with one another.
Challenge 21 - is a nationally approved scheme to combat alcohol sales to juveniles. Individuals who may look younger than 21 years of age are required to prove they are over 18 by producing a recognised method of identification. Posters, stickers and staff badges are circulated to raise the awareness of this scheme.
The Gallery - a confidential circulation of photographs and information of those people who have broken the Licence Watch code of conduct.
Drugs Dogs – Circulation of posters/stickers promoting the use by South Yorkshire Police of passive drugs dogs which visit licensed premises to detect those who may be misusing and dealing in illegal drugs.
Dress Code - posters to assist licensees in raising and keeping standards of dress within their premises.
Newsletter – a regular circulation of advice and information to members.
Conferences & Meetings - to provide advice guidance and training to its members.
